Mexican Magic: A Powerful Guide to Brujeria in Everyday Life

Let me just tell you—I have read Mexican Magic by Laura Davila multiple times. I wanted to let it marinate before giving it my honest review, and now that I’ve soaked it all in, I can confidently say: Laura has done it again.

Mexican Magic - Brujeria, Spells and Rituals for All Occasions - Laura Davila

This book isn’t just a guide; it’s a gift, a living, breathing experience of Mexican Brujeria that will remain a part of my life and practice indefinitely. While I didn’t grow up being directly taught Brujeria, Mexican Magic unearthed pieces of my past that suddenly made sense. Reading Laura’s words felt like ancestral memory recall, reminding me of moments on the ranch with my family—my grandma saying she had a little bruja in her, her herbal concoctions, the small but undeniable ways she wove magic into everyday life.

Laura doesn’t just teach magic; she reminds us of it. She weaves together history, necessity, and cultural identity, reminding us that Mexican magic is not just about spells—it’s about survival, adaptation, and transformation.

One of my favorite things about this book is how Laura speaks so honestly and bluntly about Brujeria without disclaimers or sugarcoating. She doesn’t try to soften what some people call “taboo” topics or add unnecessary warnings—she presents the knowledge as it is, as it has always been, and lets the reader decide what aligns with them. Magic isn’t about playing safe—it’s about faith, courage, and action.

The book is filled with powerful lessons and wisdom, but one of my favorite quotes is:

“Necessity is the catalyst. Necessity is what wakes the seeker, the witch, our inner alchemist.”

This book is necessity. It covers an incredible range of topics, from the foundation of Mexican magic and the importance of Brujas de Oficio, to saints, angels, animas, magical Mexican ingredients, kitchen witchery, animal magic, and even cultural issues and solutions. If you have a need, a desire, or a struggle—chances are, Laura has covered it here.

If you truly want to understand Mexican magic—not just as a concept but as a living, evolving practice—this is the book. Whether you are looking to connect with your heritage, deepen your craft, or find practical ways to bring Brujeria into your daily life, Mexican Magic belongs on your shelf. A treasure trove of knowledge, tradition, and empowerment.

This is just a portion of my desk right now. I have so many works in progress going on. I have so much yarn, so many half sewn, almost completely sewn poppets and it's overwhelming me lol #WitchLife #CrochetLife #CrochetWitch
A colorful, chaotic pile of crochet work in progress. The image shows various pieces of crocheted fabric in bright yarns including turquoise, orange, yellow, brown, and multicolored threads. Loose strands of yarn and unfinished crochet parts are scattered across a desk, partially covered by a large puff of white polyfill stuffing. In the background, part of a computer monitor is visible, indicating a crafting workspace.

Not every whisper in your head is divine.

Working with Deity is... well, work. It's not just vibes and validation, it’s reciprocity, responsibility, and reverence. You don’t just ā€œvibeā€ your way into a sacred relationship. You show up. You listen. You serve.

I have fallen for you. When you speak, I listen... truly listenand smile, helpless against the way your voicemakes me tumble all over again.Every word pulls me deeper. When silence stretches between us,I savor it.I honor the hush as holy, falling in love with simply existing beside you,no words needed, no masks worn. When you laugh,my heart, cold, blackened thing that it wascracks wide, softens, gleams. You are a rarity among this crowded world,a true gem glittering in dust.I have waited lifetimes for you.I was shaped for this very purpose:to remember who you are,to celebrate your body, your spirit, your every sacred flaw. When I stare into your eyes, ghosts of past lives spark awake.I remember youand in that breath, nothing matters but this moment. ...
